At some point in my twenties, I got interviewed by a Spanish television network, Univision or whatever. They made a little segment about me and my aunts and uncles all saw it. They work in my grandfather’s restaurant in Tecate, so the TV’s always on in the background, and they recognized my voice because I used to skip my words a lot and say, “Um, um,” especially when I spoke Spanish. For me, this TV segment was really not a big deal—it was at the bottom of the list of important things I’ve done—but to them, it meant a lot. They were really excited that I seemed to pop up out of nowhere.

The next time I visited Mexico, they all wanted to hear more about my life. They were like, “Oh, my God, we saw you!” But it just felt like too little, too late. It was like, This TV segment is why you like me? It was this moment of feeling like I was finally being viewed as a grown-up, but then realizing, their approval meant nothing to me. I think that’s how life works, though. Nobody wants you ’til somebody wants you. Then everybody wants you. But I’ve been doing this all my life. Nothing has changed.
